How CBD Evolved from the Original 4/20 to Today

This year is unique in that 4/20 is more than just a day – it’s the entire month. You’re likely already aware of the term’s association with cannabis and hemp. What’s less known is the actual origins of the 4/20 story. There are several theories as to where it originated (including Hitler’s birthday and a police code for cannabis), but the most popular belief is that it came from California in the 1970s.
Back then, hippie culture was all the rave, so let’s dive into how the culture grew in the 50 years since 1970.

Celebrating Cannabis Culture

Cannabidiol (CBD) is legal now, and it’s widely used for therapeutic benefits ranging from relieving anxiety and pain to certain forms of epilepsy. But it wasn’t always this way. In fact, it only just recently became legal with the 2018 Farm Bill. Prior to that, CBD, and all the components of the cannabis hemp plant, were treated as Schedule I drugs by the Drug Enforcement Agency.

In the fall of 1971, a group of California teens, known as the Waldos, learned of an abandoned cannabis plant they could tend to maturity. As they waited for school and practice to end, they reminded each other of their after-school meeting by simply saying the time – 4:20. Everybody in the school knew to associate the term with cannabis, and it soon spread like wildfire among teenagers and adults everywhere as a universal code word for the drug.

Today’s world uses a variety of emojis as codes for drugs, and these codes often change as people are caught by police and codes deciphered. Of course, cannabis is no longer considered illicit in most states, and CBD has been legalized in most countries, so the term 420 is mostly used these days to convey a celebration of cannabis culture.

4/20 CBD Celebrations

Now that CBD is so widely available, 4/20 is no longer a taboo part of the underground culture. In fact, it’s become mainstream, being referenced in a variety of movies, TV shows, and mainstream media. You can even find the history of 4/20 on the History Channel and its website. It’s easy to forget that many of today’s Boomers who draw the ire of younger generations were once free-spirited hippies themselves.

Societal norms change with the times, and it’s perfectly legal to use CBD these days. There are 11 states with legal adult-use recreational cannabis and 33 states that allow medical marijuana usage. If you’re within the legal boundaries, by all means celebrate 4/20 as you please. For everyone else, there’s CBD.

Using CBD and hemp, you can celebrate the pioneers who fought for the past 50 years to get cannabis, hemp, CBD, and other forms of the plant legalized. Typically, pothead culture celebrates on 4/20, but with everything going virtual, we’re celebrating 04/2020 throughout the entire month of April.

Stock up on the CBD you need to celebrate for the rest of this time-honored tradition of 4/20.
